Parakeets(also called budgies) are by far the most popular pet bird out there, and arguably better and more popular than dogs. You can buy them at any pet store, generally for a cheap price, though, we recommend if you want to tame you’re bird easier, buy a young or handled one from a breeder. This may be a little more expensive, but it’s worth the money. Parrots are notorious for their voice mimicking of other things and animals, but parakeets can talk even better than most parrots, but are harder to train talking on command than most parrots. These parrots are very social, and we recommend getting two if you don’t have a few hours to spare playing with you’re bird every day.
History and Mutations
Mutations are the different colored birds. These birds originated from Australia, where they were brought to Europe in 1845, where Queen Victoria was gifted a pair of parakeets. she was simply hooked to these birds, and soon everyone who saw was hooked onto them, too. Soon almost every ship had huge numbers of parakeets, and everyone who could afford them bought them. The export of parakeets from Australia was banned in 1894, but by this time it was too late, the birds were being bred all throughout Europe in the thousands. Soon parakeets became more popular and common in Europe than in Australia. Blue parakeets made olive color, dark green, etc. People figured out that by breeding different colored birds, they sometimes got a different color chick. Soon there was white and yellow as well. Around the 1920s, these birds were brought to America, where, you guessed it, everyone was hooked on these little, cheerful birds as well. Some people bought them to eat during the depression, but most people kept them as a friend and someone to talk to and be comforted by during those hard times. After the depression, pet stores opened up and added these to their reliable inventory. Soon, so many people had them that anywhere that sold pets could be counted on to sell these.
A Happy Coexistence
Parakeets are happy friends to humans, and some pets, but to dogs and (especially) cats are a whole different story. Cats will catch, kill and eat parakeets. Even cats who are not interested in hurting them will try to play with them on instinct, putting them in risk of death in an instant. Some cats can coexist with parakeets, letting them fly next to them, on them, and even let them cuddle up in their soft fur, though don’t risk it unless you’re positive you’re cat won’t attack. Dogs are less of a threat, though will try to snap at birds in the flick of a finger. Generally, though, dogs and parakeets can become best friends easy. But, what’s the solution if you’re dog or cat will attack? Get rid of them? Dogs and cats, even nice ones still have animal instincts. All you have to do is give you’re parakeet a room that you’re other pets can’t get in, like say, you’re bedroom or walk-in closet. You can take out you’re parakeet in community rooms if you are there to watch it, but never leave you’re bird alone with other large pets. Parakeets have a good loving heart, and want to be friends with everything, but sometimes they can accidentally hurt or even kill other smaller pets in play, such as finches and mice. Make sure you watch you’re parakeet when it plays with small animals.
Food
Parakeets eat mealworms, seeds, eggshells, and other things like such. Make sure never to give them salt. Also, you will want to buy organic food with all the necessary nutrients added, so you don’t need to worry about not giving them enough nutrition.
Cage setup and cleaning
This bird species is sure messy! They need cages at least big enough for them to fly back, forthwith, around, and down. You should make sure to clean the cage once every week. You can put sand, puppy-pads, or specialized bird, or even better, parakeet items.
Rating the parakeet
If we were to rate this bird, we’d give it five stars. They are loving, cute, happy and friendly. We would rate the difficulty level beginner/medium, due to their messiness. You can get them at prices from $30 to $130. In all, if bought at major pet stores, in all it can usually cost $250.
