Question from Charles Moigh:

Cool site, good info love it. Got a 55 gal with 2 bearded dragons. I love them, but I am wondering if beardies ever bite, because they are new and a friend told me they do. If possible, could someone answer that? I really want to hold them and they are so cute, so the sooner, the better!

Answer: Hello Charles,

Thank you for your kind words and for reaching out with your question! Bearded dragons, affectionately known as “beardies,” are generally known for their calm and friendly nature. However, like any animal, they can bite under certain circumstances. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Behavioral Cues: Bearded dragons communicate through body language. Signs of stress or discomfort include puffing up their beard, hissing, and gaping their mouth. Understanding these cues can help you gauge their mood and prevent bites.
  2. Proper Handling: Approach your beardies gently and calmly. Support their entire body when you pick them up, avoiding sudden or jerky movements that might startle them.
  3. Building Trust: Spend time near their tank, offering food by hand to build trust. Regular, gentle interaction helps them get used to your presence and handling.
  4. Comfortable Habitat: Ensure their tank is well-maintained with the right temperature, lighting, and hiding spots. A comfortable and secure environment reduces stress and makes them less likely to bite.
  5. Regular Interaction: Start with short handling sessions and gradually increase the duration as your bearded dragons become more comfortable with you.

Bites from bearded dragons are uncommon and usually happen if they feel threatened or stressed. By following these tips, you can build a positive relationship with your beardies and enjoy handling them safely. If a bite does occur, clean the wound thoroughly and monitor it for signs of infection. Enjoy your adorable pets and happy herping!
