A young corn snake. Corn snakes are a popular choice for either beginner or advanced exotic pet owners.

Corn snakes are growing in popularity. They are friendly, quiet, not picky, and are just as big as ball pythons. But, despite their adult size, they are incredibly small when you first get them. When we got ours, she was about eight inches long and maybe a sixth of an inch wide. Very small. But there’s only one problem: since baby corn snakes are small, they can’t eat all that big ones can. Some seem like they can’t eat pinkie(baby) mice, even when using the rule “Give them food a little bigger than their mouths”. And, on top of that, you can’t give them goldfish or rosy-red fish, because they lack thiamine. Even frozen ones. So, that limits things. Luckily, we’ve rounded up the best baby corn snake foods around, so you don’t have to worry about it.

  1. Crickets

Unlike most snakes, corn snakes can eat insects. Though they may not eat crickets right when you put it in the terrarium, because crickets don’t put off too much of a heat signal, and corn snakes hunt by heat, they will eat them. Live and dead crickets can be found at just about any local pet store, so you don’t have to trek all over unknown places and burn tons of gas.

2. Mealworms

Another at-every-pet-store item, mealworms can also be fed to the snakes. Mealworms should not be their primary food, though, just an occasional treat, due to the fact they are high in sugar.

3. Pinkie mice

I know, I know. We said some snakes can’t even eat pinkie mice. And, don’t get me wrong, that’s true, but depending on the size of your snake, they may be able to. Corn snakes get most of their protein and energy from mice, so if it is possible, make sure you give the snakes a nice meal. Remember: baby corn snakes should be fed twice every week, and no more than that. You don’t want it to overeat, because that may lead to health problems.

TIP: If you want to feed your snake mice but it’s too small, you can cut them up into little, bite-sized pieces.

4. Earthworms

Also, on top of all these, you can feed your snake small amounts of earthworms. Worms usually can be found for cheap anywhere that sells bait, and most pet stores as well. You should only feed snakes worms every once and while, and you should not feed them to adult snakes.
