Out of many beautiful fish in this world, maybe none can be more readily acquired as the betta fish. Bettas are freshwater fish that originate from Thailand. They come in many varieties of colors and appearances, and are great pets for beginners

Temperament

Even though it would look really nice to have a whole tank full of brightly colored bettas, it is probably best not to. Bettas(especially males) can be territorial, and can chase others around, leading them to die via exhaustion or stress. They are not violent or territorial with humans or other animals.

How to tell the difference between male and female bettas

As we said above, you shouldn’t keep any bettas together, but if you should, it should be females with females and males with females. Even experts can mix up a betta’s gender, especially when young.

In the image above, you can see two bettas of the same species. The female is smaller, with shorter fins, that aren’t flowy(depending on the species) Female bettas are generally not as brightly colored as males. Males fins are generally flowy. They are usually bigger than females, and more brightly colored.

Feeding

Betta fish eat a variety of things. We feed ours bloodworms, mealworms, goldfish food, shrimp pellets, and store-bought betta food. They usually need no supplements. There are also a variety of automatic Betta feeders, that give the right amount of different kinds of food per day and fish.

Water Care

Bettas are very hardy fish. They need no aerator, as long as they have enough space to come up and breath. You need to put water dechlorinator in,so that they don’t get killed by chlorine. They go for most PH levels(ours is at 7.50) and, since they’re tropical fish, they like temperatures of 70 – 85 degrees.

Price

Bettas can be found for a large variety of prices, some less than one dollar, others over $100. Generally, most fancy breeds can be purchased for $10 – $20. Most of ours were $5 – $20.

Conclusion

To conclude this post, we would like to say that, by all means, as you can see, bettas are easy pets, but they shouldn’t be treated poorly. They should always have their tank monitored, as well as diet and behavior. Most of all, they should be treated with RESPECT.
